A former member of UN, Kim Jeong Hoon explained the numerous rumors about him.

Releasing a new solo mini album on July 3, singer and actor Kim Jeong Hoon met with Newsen and shared his thoughts on the ‘prince’ image he had when he was a member of UN.

About his ‘prince’ and ‘umchinah’ image, Kim Jeong Hoon said, “I felt pressured but I felt grateful to hear that when I was at that age. But now it’s really embarrassing. I’m a lot older and I feel pressured and embarrassed to be called those things when there are so many pretty boys out there now.”

He then explained the numerous rumors surrounding him one by one.

Kim Jeong Hoon started, “There was a rumor saying that my family is a chaebol but that’s not true. My father is a government worker and my mother is a housewife.”

He continued, “Many people also think that I am a perfectionist but I’m not. I’m very easy going. Sometimes I get things started and never get to finish them. I make a fuss over small things and become broadminded about big things. I have many flaws.”

Lastly, Kim Jeong Hoon explained that he is not as smart as people think he is. He said, “Many people told me that I was elite in the past but this is not true anymore. I can’t even go on KBS 2TV’s 1 vs. 100 with my brain now. Of course I would do well if they only gave out questions related to science, which I’m interested in, but I don’t know anything when it comes to politics, economics, current events or social culture.”

Having explained the rumors that surrounded him for the past 14 years, Kim Jeong Hoon revealed his future plans and dreams.

“I don’t live my life according to a plan. I tend to just go with what happens. Now that I’m older, I would like to study more when I have the time and try teaching others. I also want to make a company with people around me to train junior entertainers. I once said that I want to make a research institute and I still would like to. I want to live my life happily.”

Meanwhile, Kim Jeong Hoon’s new mini album releasing on July 3 contains four songs, including the title song One Day (translated).

"Kim Jeong Hoon was talent scouted while he was drinking

Korean singer and actor Kim Jeong Hoon was recently a guest on tvN talk show ‘Baek Ji Yeon’s People Inside’ where he revealed that he was talent scouted while he was drinking.

Kim Jeong Hoon revealed that at that point, he was a dentistry student at Seoul National University. One day, he was drinking near the university when he was talent scouted by a passing scout. He then entered the entertainment business as one half of male duo UN.

He revealed, “At first, I thought that the other party was a scammer or just pulling a prank. And when I think back now, it feels incredible to have such a thing happening to me.”

Kim Jeong Hoon also revealed that he had dreams of researching on how the universe came about as one of his modules. Kim Jeong Hoon had a liking for such subjects and advanced science since he was little and said, “When I see the universe, I don’t really find it to be mysterious or anything. I just feel that somewhere in the universe, there would be someone that I know,” which left many in the studio stunned at his words.

"Thanks to korean fan, seina. Not only did she take the most handsome shots of Kim president, she also recorded down the interview between the reporters and Kim president, during the official press conference for Witch Yoo Hee on 2007.04.09. The answers that Kim president gave were full of humour and intelligence. Below are the details about the interview. This interview will be posted in the April issue of PLAY magazine.

Kim president had just turned 27. He is again showing his great adapting and analyzing skills.

When faced with questions that make him feel uneasy, he answered calmly and honestly. He then shifts the focus back to the character that he is acting as, analyzing his role from the perspective of a writer or director.

The role, Yoo Joon Ha, become successful with his own effort. He is more of a person who strive to become a successful person, rather than one who displays his medical skills. I like this phrase that Kim president had said ‘one good thing about being an actor is you can try out many different types of lifestyles.

Below is the interview during the official Witch Yoo Hee press conference.

Yoo Joon Ha: a character that is real and full of ambition

Q: How do you feel about the casts of Witch Yoo Hee?

JH: Hi everyone. It’s been a long time since we met. I’m seeing everyone with a good piece of work. In Witch Yoo Hee, I am acting as Yoo Joon Ha, the first love of the female lead, Ma Yoo Hee. Jun Ha is a heart surgeon that has returned from overseas study. He is a person who is full of ambition yet real. The character is a little bad, but I trying very hard in filming the show. Please look forward to the show.

Q: Please describe the other characters in the show.

JH: Beside me is Jun Hye Bin. She is not the witch (haha). Jun Hye Bin is acting as Jang Sung Mi, who is the most upright character. Han Ga In is acting as Ma Yoo Hee, also known as witch (haha). The male actors are Jae Hee, Dennis O and I. Jae Hee is acting as Mo Ryong, who is determined to become a chef. Dennis O is acting as Jonny Kurger, a famous chef for French cuisine. Therefore, there are a lot of scenes in very high class restaurants. I am a doctor but there is no operation scene. Till now, I have only been running around in the show with the white doctor robe (haha). No matter what, this will be an exciting show.

Q: Since you have attended medical school before, is it easy for you to get used to your role? Have you fulfilled your dream? This role suits you well!

JH: Although I am acting as a doctor, I do not have a chance to handle operating knife. During university time, though I studied dentistry, the role of a doctor is still foreign to me.

Q: How is it like, acting with the other casts?

JH: During the filming of goong, all of the main casts were new people. We practice a lot before acting in front of the camera, so there are a lot of chances for us to go through the scripts together. This time, all the casts were experienced one. So I feel a little scare before the filming started. When filming just started, I still could not get used to the filming scene. I knew Jun Hye Bin when I was in UN. Han Ga In’s role is a witch, but she is very kind in reality. Most of my conversation with Dennis O last for only 2 seconds. I say ‘wassoyo’. Dennis O replied ‘Whatis up’ then the conversation ended (haha). (comment by englishchou: the 2 sentence sounds the same, Kim president is showing his skills in telling lame jokes)

Q: Why not take an opportunity on today, to break the ice and have a long conversation?

JH: (looking at Dennis O, he said) ‘what’s up~~’ (dragging the last word for very long) (haha). English is not important (haha). In the show, Han Ga In, Jae Hee, Dennis O and Jun Hye Bin work in the restaurant. They are like people of the same country. I’m the only one alone in my own world. I’m the only bad person in the show. My character is strong and real. Joon Ha is the only person who believes in reality while the show is more of a comedy type. Lately, there are many shows which are of medical content. Although I am acting as a bad person, the real me is very kind (haha).

Q: Please introduce the interesting parts of the show to us.

JH: The cooking scenes are very interesting. Also, I am more concerned about the animation part. At the very beginning of the show, the castle that the witch was living in, the emotion icon that shows the change in Jae Hee’s and Joon Ha’s expression when they were having disputes. There are a lot of animations used in these scenes. This adds another interesting part to the show.

Q: You are very quiet today. Are you giving people a rough idea of how your new role is like?

JH: Yes (haha).

Q: Please compare your role in goong and in this how.

JH: In goong, the role is a sort of a negative one, but gentle in nature. In Witch Yoo Hee, the role treats things differently. He is very gentle towards Ma Yoo Hee. When it comes to work, he is full of ambition. In the show, Jang Sung Mi and Yoo Joon Ha own their success to themselves. Yoo Joon Ha is a little bad. He came back after he finished his studies in US. Thus, the way he looks at people is a little not right. Joon Ha’s way of living is totally different from me (Jeong Hoon). Since I have to act as this kind of person, I have to be quieter now.

The occupation, doctor, is only used to bring out the ambitiousness of a person who own success to himself.

Q: what are your feelings for wearing the white doctor robe?

JH: When I was studying dentistry, I wore the white robe before. But some bad things happen. Late for class, unable to attend lessons…… I recall all these memories when I put on the white robe. This has also become a chance for me to recall the past. Many memories have come back. Some people say ‘finally you have become a doctor’. I think most people will think this way. No matter what, it’s still a chance to think of the past. When I put on the white robe, I must have the feeling of becoming a real doctor, calm down, then act.

Q: Is this the reason why the director chose Mr Kim Jeong Hoon?

JH: This is what happened…. When the director persuaded me to act in the show, he asked me, ‘are you ok with pronouncing English words?’ This question is not about ‘are you good in English?’ It’s about ‘are you good in pronouncing English words?’(haha). Currently, filming has just started, so there’s no need to use English. There are only scenes of me wearing the white robe, walking around. But I am doctor that has studied in overseas, so very soon, there will be scenes of me saying English.

Q: In the future, will you accept more doctor roles?

JH: Many people tend to link my role of a doctor with my previous experience. But doctor is only a character in the show. Still, there are people whose occupation is a doctor. As an actor, we have the advantage of enjoying trying out different ways of living. As long as the character suits me, be it doctor, swindler, dictator, anything will be alright.

Q: Recently, there are a lot of shows of medical content. Have you ever think of joining the crowd?

JH: These shows use hospital as the background, making the medical part more outstanding. They show us what a doctor’s life is like. Witch Yoo Hee, is not a show of medical content. Instead, it uses restaurant as the main background of the story. The role, Yoo Joon Ha, become successful with his own effort. He is more of a person who strive to become a successful person, rather than one who displays his medical skills. But this does not mean that doctors are bad people. It is more of showing how a modern guy treats other people, rather than show people how doctors are as a person. There are more outdoor scenes than hospital scenes. The focus is on the character’s personalities rather than his occupation.

Q: Recently, Mr Kim Jeong Hoon has just hold a fan meeting in Japan. You are very popular in Japan. Moreover, the director for this show is the one that discover Bae Yong Joon. Since you are so popular in Japan, will there be great effects if this show is to be shown in Japan?

JH: Korean dramas are very popular in Japan. I heard that they are very concerned about Witch Yoo Hee. Since the director is also famous, the show will also be popular right?
For the next Japan fan meeting, if I can be onstage with all the casts and the director, I will be very happy.

This is an interview with John Hoon in a famous talk show in Japan, hosted by Cho Nan Kang of Japanese group SMAP.
It was before John Hoon release his Japanese album "5 Stella Lights".

Cho Nan Kang (C) : Welcome. Nice to meet you...
Kim Jeong Hoon (K) : Hi... actually, I've met you in Korea at the Drama Awards when I was there as a presenter.
C: Oh, yes yes yes... Please have a seat.... How do you feel?
K: I'm nervous to be interviewed by a famous person like you.. {laugh}
C: I'm nervous too.
C: How many times have you visited Japan?
K: About 20 time.. but most of that, I came here on vacation and only few times for work.
C: No wonder your Japanese is so good.
K: Just a little.. {laugh}
C: I listened to your new album. It was very nice.. all in Japanese. How was it?
K: Japanese is very similar to Korean, so that helped a lot but pronounciation for some of the words was very difficult. So, the recording took a while.
C: But your Japanese pronunciation is so perfect.
K: Thank you!
C: How do you study Japanese?
K: I started recently but during recording sessions, the staff helped me a great deal. I started with learning hiragana, katakana then Chinese.
C: I was so pleased (pleasantly surprised) with how good your songs were. K: Thank you!
C: Since when did you want to become a singer?
K: Well, it wasn't my childhood dream or anything but when I went to college in Seoul
C: That was incredible..
K: Excuse me?
C: The fact that you attended Seoul National University
K: .... I was scouted by an agency while I was attending the university. That's how I started my singing career.
C: How much did you have to study to get into Seoul National University?
K: During my high school years, I remember studying all day, every day.
C: That's why you can be so fluent in Japanese too.
K: Oh, no..
C: If you didn't become an entertainer, what would you be doing now?
K: Perhaps..teaching at a university or do research..most likely I'd have stayed in academics.
C: No wonder...academics... Which musician do you admire the most? K:ichard Marx who sang "Now and forever" and George Michaels, a formal member of the defunct pop group, WHAM! They have inspired me so much and I respect them a lot. And SMAP too. {laugh}
C: Oh, thank you! You appeared in dramas and films. How do you feel about acting?
K: I feel like I have a long way to go with acting but it's fun and I have a great desire to learn more. I started my singing career first and then tried acting, so acting came more difficult for me. You are a singer and actor too and you do both so perfectly.
C: Oh no.. not perfectly..
K: Well, I see that you do.. {laugh} What's your secret for handling both so well? When you pay attention to one, the other one tends to slip off.
C: I don't know the secret myself.. {both laughing} Just following my heart, perhaps?? What is your impression of Japan?
K: I've been here quite a few times.. There are a lot of similarities between Japan and Korea..weather, people...Japanese people are so nice and I like the food too.
C: Which Japanese food do you like?
K: Well, what I like most is..not food but a draft beer. {both laughing} Beer tastes different here.
C: I agree..
K: In a restaurant ... drinking beer... I can drink a lot.
C: Oh yes.. do you like drinking?
K: yes.. I like it.. a little..
C: There is a great restaurant nearby. I'll take you there.
K: Oh, thank you!
C: They serve many kinds of Japanese rice wines.
K: Ah... sake.
C: What is your type when it comes to ladies?
K: More than cute.. I like someone who is lady-like.
C: How about marriage?
K: Marriage?!
C: Do you have any plans?
K: I'm 26 years old now. I think I'll think about it after I turn 30. It's too early for me... I have too much left to do.
C: What's your future career plans?
K: I hope fans support me with both my acting and singing careers. In addition to Korea and Japan, I hope to tackle other Asian countries such as China and Taiwan. I hope to win over the Asian market.. being loved by many fans there.

Answer (John Hoon): I might have a love story here and there, but ...
I believe I have run out of the feeling that "Love and passion is everything" in the early sensible 20s.

Q : How would you consider for your next love?
A : I would concentrate more, to not miss it if such a person appears!

Q : Do you originally plan to follow acting career?

I began my singing career at a time of wandering in college.

Jeong Hoon: hahaha, that was a big phrase,
but it simply makes you "wonder what this is all about".
Until now, Vol. 1, 2, 3 are about movies, clothes, Asian cultures,...
Vol 4 in this issue will try to describe the culmination of my own thoughts
Simple, but clear words to represent them.
However, I can show myself through sports (TOWA event at Pusan) directly in front of you.

Q: How were the sports in Pusan?

JH: Firstly, I want to convey my appreciation to those who came to the sport event.
You have participated in the sport games, even though Pusan is far.
Together with you, we were playing hard, sweating like crazy. I had a great time.
These good memories will always remain in our hearts.
Also, for those who unfortunately could not come with me that time, you can still enjoy that event (though "Step by step" program) this Saturday, with one of the photos.

Q: Did you have a muscle pain the next day?

JH: I was fine.
I had been doing exercises and boxing and keeping a diet recently.
Daily exercises, such as weight training, keep my muscles well. It was not hard for me.
However, it's hard for other staff members (:-D )

Q: The most enjoyable sports game in the event?

JH: Tug-of-war! At first I played the role of a referee in the fan team competitions
It was really hard to compete. It looked impressive
It was fun too.

Q: Season 1, you had a camp for fans. Season 2, sports event. What do you want to do for the next season?

JH: Well .. Of course, nothing has been determined in details yet,

Kim Jeong Hoon transforms into a mature man

Do you still remember the handsome guy who became popular after acting in the 2006 romantic drama "Goong"? After he left the army, the screen image of the boyish 'Prince Yul', Kim Jeong Hoon, started to change, revealing the maturity of a man in his 30’s.


A New Image After Discharge
UW: You made a breakthrough in your first drama, "I Need Romance", after you left the army. There were many intimate scenes. Did you feel a lot of pressure?

JH: The script is very important to an actor. When I received the script, I was engrossed in it and finished reading it very quickly. The characters, the actors and the director were all very good, so I decided to act in this drama. This drama received many good reviews and it was the first time I was portrayed as a different character, so it was very interesting to me.


UW: This character is very different from your previous roles. Did you choose this because you wanted to grow up?

JH: Before enlistment, I was unable to act in local (Korea) dramas because I was busy with activities in Japan and China. I was enlisted after acting in "Goong" and "Witch Yoo Hee". If I had acted in more dramas before enlistment, I would have taken on even more roles. After I left the army, I received projects with characters which were very different from my previous ones, thus I had a chance to explore a new image.


Learning How To Act In Intimate Scenes
UW: Were you pressurized when acting with the female lead?

JH: To be honest, at the beginning I was quite worried about how to portray this character, how the viewers would respond to my character and how they would perceive my acting. Jo Yeo Jeong and I worked very well together because we had kissing scenes from the beginning, which brought us closer. After that, we had a close relationship. During the shooting, she even taught me how to act. Haha!


UW: What do you think is your greatest achievement from "I Need Romance"?

JH: I found a new me. In addition, I am still in contact with the actors of this drama. This is also a great achievement for me.


UW: From your point of view, what is the biggest difference between "I Need Romance" and the previous dramas you have acted in ("Goong" and "Witch Yoo Hee")?

JH: People from overseas get to know Kim Jeong Hoon because of "Goong", and I became popular. At that time, although my acting was not very good, it was the first time I acted so it was very meaningful to me. While shooting "Witch Yoo Hee", my schedule was very tight. I was holding concerts in Japan, and I had to make time to fly back to Korea for the shooting. Therefore I was unable to concentrate on acting. This is something I still regret. "I Need Romance" allows me to appreciate what it is like to be an actor. After acting in this drama, I have more confidence in my acting.


Nearly Became A Doctor
UW: You played the role of a director in "I Need Romance" and a doctor in the new drama "Dummy Mommy". These were characters you have not tried before.

JH: When acting as a director in "I Need Romance", I imitated the tone and favorite expressions of the director of "I Need Romance". As for doctor, it is an occupation that has a special meaning to me.


UW: If you had not switched to theatre studies, you might have become a doctor. Do you have any special feeling when acting as a doctor in the new drama? After you left the army, have you ever thought of continuing your studies?

JH: During the shooting, I would think, “If I had continued to study, I might have become a doctor now.” But once I considered it, I would think that I have made the right choice to be an actor. If not, I would be staying in the cold operating theatre or office everyday. It is impossible for everyone to be satisfied with his career. My mother ever said to me, “It was the right choice when you decided not to become a doctor.” After acting as a doctor, I am certain that I am not suitable to be one.


UW: Since your debut, do you sometimes feel that your baby face has limited the range of characters you can play? Do you still have this problem now?

JH: Yes. In most of the scripts which I received, the characters are the young master of a large corporation, a doctor, a lawyer, basically a good character... I would like to try out characters who are feeble and a parasite, or a cold-blooded killer.

In that video, Kim Hyun Joo commented that Jeong Hoon did a good job in washing her hair. JH replied that he learned how to wash hair from a friend's salon: not to scrub it roughly but to massage gently

They praised each other for acting talents,
especially Jeong Hoon praised Kim Hyun Joo ssi's crying skill:

"In the drama, Kim Hyun-joo has the most of crying scenes. She is really amazing in it."

He said it was like she had a faucet of tears in her eyes :D

Question: What about you, Kim Jung Hoon (about love)?

Kim: Some people think love is important, some think money is more important. They all have priorities. For me, love was a top priority during my early 20’s. However, it’s not so high for me anymore. I may be dating someone, but never have “I-want-to-date-someone” kind of feeling. It’s not very important for me at this point.

Jo Yeo Jeong (main actress): Uh, what??

Q: Who’s your ideal girlfriend?

Kim: I used to like cold city woman–short cut hair, glasses, mini skirt, and red shoes. None of that matters when you get older. I don’t have any particular style that I like at this moment. I just like someone pretty. All men are the same (laugh).

Q: What kind of girlfriends have you had in the past?

Kim: Not many. My first love was during senior in high school. Second is when I was 20. No one after that… those two have left me a deep impression. Not that I can’t forget them, I feel like I used up all the love left in me with those two.

Q: Have you ever thought that you’ve become an “herbivore” (someone who is passive about relationships)?

Kim: Not at all. I’m very much a carnivore.
